Your Google Business Profile Is Doing More Work Than Your Website — Especially in a Small Louisiana Market

    Jay Sigl|Founder, Sigl Creative| September 14, 2026 7 min read

Your Google Business Profile decides whether Covington, Metairie, or Destin customers find you or your competitor. Here's how to set it up right.

Pop quiz. Pull up Google on your phone and search your business name. Then search what you actually sell plus your town — "roofing Mandeville," "med spa Lafayette," "boat storage Slidell." Don't click anything yet. Just look.

Did an info card appear on the right with your hours, your phone number, your address? Did you show up in that little three-business box under the map? Are there photos that were taken this decade? Are there reviews — and did anybody from your team ever answer them? If you answered no to any of that, you've got a leak. And in a market the size of ours, that leak costs more than it would somewhere else.

That info card is your Google Business Profile. It's free. It's the single most valuable piece of digital real estate most local businesses own. And a surprising number of businesses across the Northshore, the New Orleans metro, Acadiana, and the Gulf Coast have never claimed theirs. Let's fix that.

What a Google Business Profile actually is

A Google Business Profile (Google My Business, if you've been in business a while) is the free listing Google gives you to manage how your business shows up in Search and on Maps. Your hours. Your location. Your phone number. Your website. Your photos. Your reviews. Your service area. What you sell. Verify it and edit it, and you get to tell your own story. Leave it unclaimed and Google fills it in from whatever it can scrape — which is usually wrong.

    1. It's the Local 3-Pack, and proximity is a ranking factor you already have

When someone in Covington searches "pressure washing near me," Google doesn't show them the national chain with the biggest ad spend. It shows them three businesses in a box under a map, chosen mostly on relevance, distance, and prominence. That box is called the Local 3-Pack, and it's the whole ballgame for a local business.

Here's the part that should make you optimistic: proximity is a ranking factor you already have. You can't outspend a national brand. You don't have to. You're eleven minutes from the person doing the searching and they aren't. What you have to do is give Google enough signal to trust that you're the right answer — complete categories, accurate service area, real photos, steady reviews.

A few things that matter more here than they would in a bigger market:

    • •Service area matters as much as address. If you're based in Madisonville but you work Covington, Mandeville, Abita Springs, and across the Causeway, set that service area. Half the businesses on the Northshore leave it at their own zip code and wonder why the phone doesn't ring from Metairie.
    • •Get your categories right. Primary category is heavily weighted. "Contractor" and "Roofing Contractor" are not the same search. Pick the specific one.
    • •If you serve both sides of the state line — Louisiana into the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Pensacola, Destin, 30A — you may need more than one profile, and there are rules about that. Get it wrong and you can get suspended.

Every day you leave this unclaimed, someone in your parish is searching for exactly what you sell and calling somebody else.

    2. It's your first impression, and around here your reputation precedes you

Reviews are the second thing a prospect looks at after your star rating. Not the number — the words. They're reading your reviews to find out what you're actually like to work with, and they're reading your replies to find out how you act when something goes wrong.

Answer every review. Personally. Name the job. The good ones and the bad ones. In a small market, reputation moves person to person, and Google is just where people confirm what they already heard. A steady drip of fresh, specific reviews — ten a month for a year — beats a hundred and twenty in one push.

    3. Photos do more than you think

Listings with recent photos get more clicks, more calls, and more direction requests. Not stock photos. Real ones. Exterior, interior, team, work in progress, finished work. Upload a few new ones every month. It signals to Google that your business is active, and it signals to your prospect that you're a real operation run by real people.

    4. Google Posts are a free channel almost nobody in our market uses

Inside your profile you can publish short posts — an offer, an event, an update, a new product. They show up right on your listing. Most of your local competitors have never published one. That's an opening. A crawfish boil special. A hurricane-prep checklist in July. A "we're open, here's our parking situation during the parade" note in February. A new service. A staff introduction. It takes ten minutes and it's free.

    Your 20-minute checklist

    1. Claim and verify the profile. (Postcard, phone, or video verification — Google decides which.)
    2. Set the correct primary category, then add secondaries.
    3. Set your real service area — every parish and town you actually work.
    4. Confirm hours, phone, and website. Add special hours for the next holiday.
    5. Upload ten real photos. Exterior, interior, team, work in progress, finished work.
    6. Write a description in your own voice that names your town.
    7. Answer every review you've ever received, oldest to newest.
    8. Publish one Google Post.
    9. Put a calendar reminder on the first of every month to add a photo and a post.

That's it. That's the whole thing. It's free and it will outperform anything else you do this month. Want a hand with it? We do this for businesses all over South Louisiana and the Gulf Coast — Madisonville to Metairie, Lafayette to Destin. Schedule a call and we'll audit your profile, clean it up, and get you showing up where your neighbors are already looking. Let's take your digital presence from functional to exceptional.
