5 Easy Ways to Grow Your Email List

Picture this: you’ve worked hard to craft a series of emails that help customers feel more connected to your business. You’ve written personalized transactional emails to follow up with customers after they make a purchase and created educational emails to teach them how to use your product. You also have some impressive promotional emails ready to send to boost your upcoming sale.

But as you schedule these emails, it hits you:

Who do you send them to?

If you have a small email list of subscribers, you’re in luck. Today we’re covering 5 easy ways to grow your email subscriber list.

You should keep 2 things in mind while working to build your email list.

First, your email list should mainly consist of your past and potential customers.

It doesn’t do any good if your emails go out to people who don’t want or need your product.

In fact, this can actively hurt your business. The more your emails go unopened and are put in the trash, the more likely email service providers (ESPs) will flag your emails as spam. That means your prospective customers won’t even see your emails.

Second, building your email list requires a strong, clear call to action (CTA).

Even prospective customers won’t give you their email address if you can’t communicate clearly the next step you want them to take. They need a strong CTA and a good reason to sign up for your email list.

Your CTA should be short, clear, and specific. It’s the couple of words or sentences that direct your reader to sign up for your email list.

Ready to fill your email list with subscribers and get them hyped about your brand? Here are 5 easy ways to do it.

1. Offer value in your CTA.

People will only give you their email address if you offer them something of value. “Subscribe to my email newsletter!” isn’t a sufficient CTA. Tell your audience what’s in it for them! Get your audience excited about receiving emails from you. Make them feel like they’re part of a special group.

Give your audience a good reason to sign up for your emails. They should contain valuable information related to your business like industry trends, tips for using your products, and upcoming sales.

Here are some examples of good CTAs that offer value in exchange for a person’s email address:

  • “Subscribe to get the latest beauty trends delivered to your inbox every week.”
  • “Join our online fitness community for weekly tips, tricks, and hacks!”
  • “Get FREE recipes and kitchen inspo when you join my email list.”
  • “Want to be the first to hear about sales and giveaways? Sign up for my email newsletter to stay in the know!”

Once you’ve figured out the perfect CTA, use it on your social media, blog posts, and website — anywhere you can direct people to your sign-up form.

2. Add a CTA after online sales.

You probably already ask for your customer’s email address when they make a purchase online. That’s how you send them order confirmations and other notifications about their purchase. But did you know you can also add a CTA here to join your email list?

At the end of the order form, add a checkbox with a CTA to sign up for your email list. Don’t forget to include a little bit of info about what your customers are signing up for (see point #1). Customers who are interested in hearing more from your business can click the checkbox to opt in.

Depending on your ESP, your website host, and the tools each offer, you may be able to add an email capture to your online checkout for free! How you set up this email capture will depend on how your ESP and website platform are connected. All that means is you may need to do a little research or experimentation to perfect the setup of your email capture.

But before you hit “publish” on your site, make sure the checkbox isn’t automatically selected. You could be in violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a series of rules from the European Union regarding data privacy. Customers need to check the box themselves and consent to receiving your newsletter. For more tips on how to stay GDPR-compliant, check out this handy article by Thrive Themes!

3. Add a CTA on your website’s “About Us” page.

The people who read your “About Us” page are probably not casual browsers. Those who visit this page are interested in learning more about your business, which makes them great candidates for your email list.

Add a CTA near the bottom of the page and get an even more engaged customer. Here’s an example:

“Want to learn more about us? Click here to join our email list! You’ll get insider news, access to our latest products, exclusive discounts, and updates from our founders. We can’t wait for you to join our community!”

The best part about this method? It’s totally free and takes almost no time. Simply include a CTA and a link or form to your email sign-up on your “About Us” page.

4. Convert your store’s foot traffic into email sign-ups.

Do you have a brick-and-mortar storefront? Promote your email list there too!

Chat with your customers at the cash register. Let them know you have a newsletter with exclusive content, early access to sales, and previews of upcoming products. All you need is their email address. Keep some email sign-up forms handy or use a tablet to take down their information.

Don’t sweat it if they decline. Not everyone will accept, but some customers will — as long as you take a chance and ask!

5. Pin a CTA to the top of your Twitter and Facebook pages.

If you have a Twitter or Facebook page for your business, turn your followers into email subscribers using your pinned post. You don’t have to be a social media guru to make it work. This method of building your email list is simple, quick, and free!

When you “pin” a post, it shows up at the top of your social media page no matter how old it is. Anyone who visits your social media page will see your pinned post, making it a useful resource for promoting your email list.

The post should include your CTA and a link to the landing page where they can subscribe to your email list. Here’s how you pin it to your page:

  • Publish your post.
  • Go to your profile.
  • Find the post you want to pin (it should be the newest one).
  • Click on the three dots.
  • Select the option to pin your post!

Now everyone who visits your Facebook or Twitter page will see a CTA to subscribe to your email list!
